About AFSC

The American Forces' Spouses' club(AFSC) is a combined community spouses' organization that operates in Yongsan Korea.  The focus of our group is two-fold.  First, our group strives to enhance the lives of the spouses stationed here at Yongsan as well as elsewhere on the peninsula.  We do this through monthly luncheons hosted by AFSC.  Activities planned throughout the year include shopping trips to local markets, educational opportunities, and cultural activities.  Annual events that are sponsored by AFSC include the Tour of Homes, USO Six Star Salute, and a Senior Tea for graduating high school seniors.  Secondly, the AFSC works to support both the Korean and American communities in which we live.  Financial support is provided to any local organization which demonstrates a need.  The Chosun Gift Shop is the main fundraiser for the AFSC.  Run by volunteers, it is open Wednedsay and Saturday.  The Chosun offers a wide variety of items from throughout the Far East such as jewelry, linens, furniture, and rugs.  The profits raised from the Chosun are donated to both Korean and American projects.  Korean orphanages and homes for the elderly and disabled are our direct beneficiaries.

Reasons to Join AFSC

A reason to participate in AFSC is for the opportunity to branch out and meet a diverse and interesting group of people. You can simply attend the luncheons to visit members or you can become more involved and work on the board or one of the various committees. Meeting, making friends and sharing experiences is one of the highlights of the AFSC experiences. You will hear helpful suggestions about getting things accomplished on post, travel advice, traditions and cultural event from other countries, tips on great shopping spots and much more.  

Other excellent reasons to join AFSC are the many, varied activities that are sponsored, from sport groups to craft projects. Receiving the monthly Chosun Chatter(our newsletter) with all of its valuable information is a great help to those living here. Lastly, on our list of great reasons to join, is that you will be given a phone directory of members' numbers, plus other helpful post numbers that we all call frequently. **Remember your membership form and dues must be submitted by the middle of September in order to be included in the directory.

Our members are truly a "purple" bunch, a mix of all services and civilians. We are Army, Navy, Marine and Air Force officers and enlisted spouses, both active duty and retired. We are DOD civilian employees, DODDS teachers and their spouses. We are American Red Cross, USO, and Special Service personnel and spouses. We are diplomatic mission and UNC officers and spouses. We are also young adults(eighteen years of age) in the above households. Where can you ever meet such a diverse group of people? American Forces Spouses Club is one of the most rewarding organizations you can join in Korea. Our main fund raising arm, The Chosun Gift Shop, makes thousands of dollars each year. We donate half of the money to our American community, college scholarships and the other half to worthwhile charities around the Korean Peninsula. AFSC members can serve on the Chosun Gift Shop board, work in the store on Wednesdays and Saturdays, or unpack shipments on many Tuesdays and Thursdays. Whether by working or shopping and spending money at the Chosun, you become a part of the gifts we donate. Of course, in a purely selfish light, you also acquire wonderful "Asian" finds to decorate your house or interesting gifts to send home, and you meet some of the wonderful people who work there. Our organization generates other funds from its Ways and Means committee and our membership dues. Ways and Means committee sells cookbooks, supplies vendors before luncheons from which our members can shop, sells raffle tickets for many great door prizes, etc.
